Studied Japanese at the highest of five levels for three semesters as an exchange student through San Francisco State University. In addition to studies:
- Assisted the Office of International Programs in various ways, including translation for the school's international events and parties.
- After my first semester at the University, had the pleasure of leading the three day orientation programs for new students in autumn of 2003 and spring of 2004.
- Had the honor of giving the class speech to the University Dean at the closing ceremony.
- Was jokingly dubbed "Boss of Ryuugakusei (exchange students)" by the department chair.

Major in Japanese Studies. Course work included linguistics, culture, history, and literature. All classes were conducted entirely in Japanese. Major GPA 3.81, overall GPA 3.44. Regularly made the dean's list.

One of two principle founders who helped grow the company from an operation out of an apartment into a 3000 square foot office with a staff of about 20 within a two year period. Member of a three person executive board responsible for building a new business entailed a wide range of responsibilities well beyond technology. These include management, finance, operations, and sales.
Projects of interest include:
Part of a three person team that built a credit card application processing system for a major financial institution. Millions of offers were sent via direct mail with a URL and a code that were then processed by our custom-developed Java application. The system was deployed across three Sun Sparc servers with load balancing and fail over in an extremely secure environment. Application utilized servlet's running in Orion application server and made use of PostgreSQL (open source database), and custom written Perl scripts that were required to integrate into the client's legacy back-end processing system. The system processed tens of thousands of offers.
Collaborated with a designer to provide dynamic content and integrate PHPBB (popular open source bulletin board application) to meet strict design requirements. Used open source technologies including PHP, MySQL, Perl and Linux. Application includes the following features: profile management, featured member profile (for display on the landing page), and a publishable and auto archiving news letter. Perl script called by cron backs up system nightly.

Initiated major improvements in the technological infrastructure including the following:
- Migrated Medweb's internal support process from a chaotic simple "call-in" system to a intranet web-based support ticketing system.
- Moved the programmers from an unmanaged programming system to a CVS system.
- Migrated the single, old DNS server to a redundant, shared-load system.
- Implemented an internal firewall, audited and secured existing systems.
- Setup a new secondary router for new clients and began the process of switching them to DSL. Planned the transition and launched the migration process.
- Researched and tested new hardware and software technologies, and then recommended and implemented those solutions. Also collaborated with CEO, COO, and clients to design network solutions and then coordinated and managed the implementation of those plans.
In addition:
Managed local support center of five UNIX and NT engineers as well as the support staff in Europe, Malaysia and Brazil. Managed maintenance of entire class B public network. Maintained all primary network routers (primarily Cisco) and delegated responsibility of subnetworks and client networks to staff. Provided support where needed. Managed all internal system servers such mail, DNS, file servers, POP, etc.
Coordinated software releases, bug tracking, and code integration between senior officers, clients and programmers. Trained existing and new support staff. Provided support via phone and in person all over the world.
Assisted sales staff in product demonstrations and provided technical details to clients' inquiries.

Designed, implemented and supported integrated network and server solutions for high bandwidth demand clients. Managed and provided second tier level support for the rest of the technical support department. Coordinated installation trips and conducted support in person as well as via phone.

Traveled to numerous cities across the United States to install SGI, Sun, NT and Linux servers with an extremely wide range of hardware solutions including RAID arrays, tape backup devices, CD-ROM jukeboxes, plus an assorted range of networking equipment such as switches, bridges, routers, FDDI and gigabit ethernet.
Developed workflow-oriented systems, which included testing early release software and hardware that helped give clients an added edge over their competition. Utilized shell and TCL/TK programming to provide some customized solutions.
Developed an early integrated file sharing system for Microsoft, Macintosh and NFS based clients with unified access privileges to all servers on a given network.
